FAQ

What is the FAFSA?

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is a form which both patents, and their children, fill out together and submit to the federal government to determine how much money their child will qualify for in the form of grants and loans.

When is the earliest possible date in which I can file my FAFSA ?

The earliest possible date one can submit their FAFSA application is January first of their child's current school year.

Should I pay someone for help in filling out the application?

No, you don't need to. If you apply using FAFSA on the Web at www.FAFSA.ed.gov, you get online instructions for each question, and you can chat online "live" with a financial aid counselor. It should also be noted that filing online vs. the hard copy form expedites the turn around time of receiving your financial aid results by at least 50%.

What is a PIN number?

This is your Personal Identification Number which allows you to access your account at any time.

How do I get a PIN number?

You can obtain your pin number 2/3 days after initiating the process of filling out your FAFSA online or 2/3 weeks after submitting your hard copy.

I haven't finished my taxes yet. What should I do?

If you are facing a deadline and want to get the application in asap, then you may estimate your tax amounts for the time being. Once you have completed your tax forms, make the corrections to your file either on the Web or by mailing back your paper hard copy Student Aid Report (SAR).

What is the Student Aid Report (SAR)?

The Student Aid Report (SAR) is a report sent back to the student, and their parents, which verifies that everything submitted originally is correct. If the government detects a mistake, such as a wrong social security number, then the correction is made on the SAR and returned to the federal government. If no mistakes occur then the student keeps the SAR for his/her records.

Should I file regardless of my parent's income?

Yes, the more expensive the school the more financial one qualifies for. Also, if one is denied federal aid in the form of grant money then they may qualify for grant money directly from the college's financial aid dept.

What is the difference between scholarships, grants and loans?

Scholarships are monetary awards based on academic and/or athletic achievement. Grants are monetary awards based on financial need. Both grants and scholarships need not be repaid. They technically are free monies for the student. Loans (student) are monetary awards which must be paid back to the government after the student has graduated from their program of study. Interest rates on student loans are very reasonably nominal.

Do I have to apply for financial aid every year?

Yes, a student must submit a FAFSA every year they are in school in order to obtain financial aid.

I am an older student. Am I eligible to receive financial aid?

Yes, age is not a factor in determining eligibility for the Federal Student Aid Programs.
